We know that the thought of having a tooth removed can make people feel uneasy.

At Gibside Dental, we approach extractions with empathy and calm, taking time to explain each step so you feel reassured. In our stone-built practice near the Gibside National Trust estate, you’ll find a space designed to ease anxiety—neutral tones, soft lighting, greenery and a spa-like atmosphere.

Whether it’s a troublesome wisdom tooth, a severely damaged tooth that cannot be saved, or preparation for another treatment, we’ll carry out your extraction gently and thoughtfully. Our welcoming staff will make you feel immediately at ease.

Your treatment journey

  • Step 1 – Assessment: A thorough examination, supported by X-rays or scans, helps us understand exactly what’s happening. We’ll explain what we see in clear, straightforward terms.
  • Step 2 – Comfort first: Local anaesthetic is used so you remain comfortable. For complex cases or very anxious patients, we’ll talk through additional options for support, such as sedation.
  • Step 3 – Gentle removal: With careful techniques, the tooth is eased out with as little disruption as possible.
  • Step 4 – Aftercare guidance: We’ll give you tailored advice and follow-up to support healing, including what to expect and how to look after the area.

Caring for yourself afterwards

  • Follow our aftercare instructions carefully.
  • Keep the area clean, but avoid vigorous rinsing on day one.
  • Use recommended pain relief if needed.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking through a straw during healing.
  • Attend your follow-up appointment if required, so we can check progress.

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth often erupt in the late teens or early twenties. Sometimes they grow without issue, but they can also become impacted, emerge at awkward angles or cause pain and infection. If that happens, we can remove them with care and precision.

Using CBCT imaging and digital scans, we map the position of your wisdom teeth, so treatment is planned around your comfort and safety.

Our very own Dr Sam worked as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery trust doctor at Sunderland Royal Hospital, where he gained invaluable surgical knowledge and experience managing complex cases. This foundation has enabled him to deliver a broad range of advanced treatments, including difficult wisdom tooth extractions.

If there’s a way to save your tooth, we’ll explore it first:

  • Restorations such as crowns or fillings.
  • Root canal treatment for infected teeth.
  • Monitoring in some wisdom tooth cases.

Frequently asked questions

Will it hurt?

We use effective anaesthetic to keep you comfortable. Some tenderness is normal after, but we’ll guide you on managing it.

Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?

No. We only remove them if they’re causing problems or are likely to do so.

When is an extraction needed?

There are occasions when removing a tooth is the best step for long-term health and comfort:

  • Severe decay or damage beyond repair.
  • An infection that cannot be resolved with root canal treatment.
  • Overcrowding when planning orthodontic care.
  • Stubborn or painful wisdom teeth.

We’ll always consider every alternative before recommending extraction, and guide you through your options.

How long does it take to heal?

Most people feel settled after a few days, with complete healing over a couple of weeks.

What if I’m very nervous?

We understand. Our team takes time to talk things through, and we can discuss extra support to make the experience easier, such as sedation.
